Pet-food projects combine a large water load with strict raw-protein hygiene. Dryer capacity must be planned together with cold-chain separation, cleaning access, odor management and validated finished-product controls.

Define product and food-safety controls

Separate raw and finished-product movement. Document meat species, particle or piece size, fat level, recipe, pathogen controls and the point at which the product becomes ready-to-eat or shelf stable.

The freeze dryer removes water but should not be assumed to provide a validated kill step. The complete process must follow the applicable food-safety plan.

Size by water removal and tray area

Calculate fresh input, solids and estimated water per batch. Check whether the condenser can capture the planned ice load with margin and whether the vacuum path can handle peak vapor flow.

Tray area and loading density determine practical capacity. Thick cubes, patties and ground mixtures require different cycles even at equal weight.

Plan sanitation and changeover

Review chamber access, cart and tray cleaning, floor drains, condensate handling and separation between raw and finished utensils. High-fat residues need a defined cleaning method.

For multi-species or allergen-sensitive production, write the changeover sequence before selecting the plant layout.

Match packaging to dryer output

Unload into a low-humidity zone and package without delay. Validate bag or pouch barrier, seals, oxygen control and retained-sample stability.

The number of dryers, staggered cycles and packaging shifts should be modeled as one schedule.
